No LMFT National Compact — License Required in Every State You Practice

Unlike registered nurses (who have the NLC compact), there is no national compact for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists. You must obtain a separate license for each state in which you work — including telehealth assignments where the patient is located. Allow 6–12 weeks per state for endorsement processing.

LMFT Credential Requirements

Master's Degree in MFT or Equivalent

Master of Marriage and Family Therapy (MMFT), Master of Arts in MFT (MAMFT), or COAMFTE-accredited equivalent. Some states accept clinical psychology or counseling master's degrees — verify with each state board.

2,000–4,000 Post-Degree Supervised Hours

Hours required vary by state. California requires 3,000 total hours (1,750 direct client contact, 1,250 non-client hours). Hours must be completed under licensed MFT supervision and documented precisely for endorsement.

AMFTRB MFT National Examination (Most States)

The national MFT licensing exam administered by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB). Score transfers between most states. Exception: California uses its own exam — CA does NOT accept AMFTRB scores.

California: CA MFT Exam + Law & Ethics Exam

California does not use the AMFTRB national exam. CA BBS administers its own MFT licensing exam, plus a mandatory separate California Law & Ethics examination. Both must be passed for CA licensure.

Renewal: Every 2 Years with 36 CEUs

LMFT licenses in most states renew on a 2-year cycle with 36 continuing education hours required. California requires 36 CEUs including mandatory coursework in law & ethics, cultural competency, and aging/long-term care.

AAMFT Membership (Recommended)

American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy membership provides credentialing support, CE resources, and professional standards documentation often requested during multi-state license endorsement.

LMFT Licensing Fraud Warning

Some staffing agencies claim to offer "LMFT compact reciprocity" or "multi-state LMFT licensure." There is no LMFT compact. Any agency claiming compact reciprocity for LMFTs is misinformed or misleading you. Each state requires its own separate license application. Verify directly with the state licensing board before accepting an assignment.

Frequently Asked Questions — Travel LMFT Jobs

Is there an LMFT compact?
No — there is no national compact for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists as of 2026. Every state requires a separate license application and endorsement process. Allow 6–12 weeks per state. There is no LMFT equivalent to the nursing compact (NLC). Travel LMFTs must build a multi-state license portfolio over time, starting with the highest-demand markets: California, Texas, New York, and Florida.
How long does LMFT licensing take in California?
California LMFT licensing takes 8–12 weeks for out-of-state endorsement. California uses its own MFT examination administered by the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences (CA BBS) — this is separate from the AMFTRB national exam used in most other states. California also requires a separate Law & Ethics exam. Apply to CA BBS at least 10–12 weeks before your target contract start date.
What is the difference between LMFT and LCSW?
LMFTs (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists) specialize in family systems, couples therapy, and relational treatment approaches. LCSWs (Licensed Clinical Social Workers) focus on individual therapy plus community social work, case management, and systems navigation. Both credentials have similar pay ranges ($60–$90/hr contract). Neither has a national compact license. LCSWs have slightly broader acceptance on insurance panels and in hospital settings; LMFTs are more common in outpatient, school-based, and corrections settings.
Can LMFTs work in correctional settings?
Yes — California's CDCR (California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation) has dedicated LMFT positions within its mental health delivery system. The federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) also hires LMFTs for forensic behavioral health work. Corrections LMFT roles typically pay a 10–15% premium over community mental health. A California LMFT license is required for CDCR positions.
What is the pay for travel LMFT jobs in 2026?
Travel LMFT jobs pay $60–$85/hr on contract in 2026, translating to $2,400–$3,400/week for a 40-hour assignment. California pays the highest at $72–$90/hr. Locum tenens (private practice coverage) positions pay $90–$110/hr but are typically shorter-duration engagements. All contract packages include a taxable base rate plus tax-free housing and meal stipends for qualifying travelers.
Do I need an AMFTRB exam to get licensed as an LMFT in California?
No — California does not use the AMFTRB (Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards) national examination. California uses its own MFT licensing exam administered by the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences (CA BBS), plus a separate California Law & Ethics exam. If you passed the AMFTRB exam for another state, you cannot transfer that exam score to California — you must sit for the CA-specific exams.
